Brand Redesign

o1 Project Description
Merrimac House of Pizza
24 Merrimac Square, Merrimac, MA

Theproject this is on will create a unique logo that Merrimac House of Pizza needs to distinguish its brand design from its competitors. Being part of a similar building as a town market and a few other local chains, the color scheme for all of them are the same, a solid red color behind golden colored text.
Ideation

o2 Logo Concept
While thinking up an idea for a logo for Merrimac House of Piza, I need to think of all the words I can associate with the place in order to get a better representation of what I might need to make a successful logo for the business. In this WordMap, I have thought of a few different words and what may branch off of them. This in turn might help me figure out what can go into making a successful design.

o3 Logo Concept
For this part of the logo creation assignment, I looked up various different pizza company logo's in order to help create a visualization of what a pizza logo should look like. The pictures I had obtained were from various pizza places, both small, or in this case, local pizza places, from their respective area's, and big named pizza places such as Papa Johns and Little Caesars. The reason why I picked both local and large scale businesses is to show that a lot of these companies have logos that not only have a distinguishing font/typeset for their name, but they also have an accompanying image to go along with it, making it more susceptible to standing out and being noticed. A lot of these logo's also have a motif of showing some of the pizza ingredients in their logo design, such as the Sal's pizza having tomatoes coming off the vine. While that obviously isn't necessary for a logo, it is indeed a nice touch.

What I would like:
as I have stated before, I would like a design that is "unique" to the Merrimac House of Pizza Logo. Other local competition, such as DeLeo's does not have a logo containing an image, but the typeset and color scheme of its logo is different enough from the businesses around it to catch the attention of travelers and customers alike.
Sketches

o4
For this part of the logo creation assignment, I have created 11 different sketches that represent a pizza chain, but more importantly, Merrimac House of Pizza's Chain. Of the Logo's that I like the second logo down on the left side, known as logo #3 (the man thinking about pizza). I think that with a good refinement, this logo can work in my favor. The man is looking out of a windowsill, and is day dreaming about pizza. Its a quaint and funny little logo that I enjoyed making. For the second logo that I like, the top right logo which has the pizza slice turning into the name of the establishment (the cheese from the pizza is creating the lettering). I think its cool when places get creative with liquid like designs, such as a Tie-die place I had once visited had ink splattered to create the logo for the company. Little idea's of the names of the establishment being derived from the images makes it seem more unique as well. Lastly, one of the last designs I think I will refine is design #9, which has the rolling-pan and the Pizza dough with the name of the establishment on it. While it looks very unrefined right now, with a little time and effort I can make it look much better. Idea's for this one might include making the letters of the business out of different toppings and such.

Roughs

Creative Direction
For my roughs, I had decided to go with my second design and my third design as I felt these two could potentially be cleaned up to where it isn't too illustration focused, but it still allows a good simple design in which people can appreciate. I have made some mock-up roughs in which I had done two versions of my second design and one of my third design. I decided to try having the third design without the mustache as to see if it leaves a good amount of room for the title to be placed, or if it feels too empty without it. The second two roughs are just a rearranged design of my second sketch, one featuring the pizza cheese dripping on the name of the business, and one where a single slice of pizza is placed on a plate. I still have some idea's for these two and I plan on working on these three a little more before I select a final design. Edit: I just realized that the logo's are not officially transparent and will fix these as soon as possible.

Logo Revisions
The colors I had chosen for the assignment was warm colors that you would usually associate with warm food. I had used these colors for two reasons. The first is they associate with pizza, as yellow/orange and red are colors that you see on a finished pizza. The second reason was because these are the colors of my logo, minus the gold. While I haven't decided where to implement the gold, I am sure that will replace the orange that is currently the color of the font. The font I had chosen also was taken into consideration greatly. I wanted a font that wasn't used too often, but would be visually appealing and also semi to professional looking. As last part of this assignment, I had modified my logo to hopefully be less illustration heavy and more focusing on the wording.

To the right, I have a few different examples of what my logo might look like on various things such as clothing, signs, and stationary pieces.
